Say this about the "special" jerseys the University of Wisconsin football team will wear Sept. 29 for their prime time game at Nebraska: They’re going to generate a reaction.

In a mix of old school and futuristic, the white uniform features bright red shoulders and a Black Leather Lucifer Bow 120mm red block "W" and, notably, "Badgers" on the back where the nameplate would go.

The helmet carries over that bright red, with a block white "W" Leather Lucifer Bow 40mm and a black facemask.

The pants are pretty standard white with two wide, red vertical stripes but the socks are black with thin, red stripes that taper, and the black shoes feature red and white elements that are reflective, coach Bret Bielema told the team in a YouTube video released by UW.

The finishing touch are bright red receiver gloves that display white block Ws on the palms.

"It’s very unusual for Wisconsin to do anything out of the normal, traditional uniforms," senior defensive back Devin Smith said in the video. "I’m excited that my senior year, we’re getting to do something different."

The helmet, in particular, appealed to running back James White, who thinks it’s cool "to change it up a bit."

Nebraska previously released images of its jersey to be used in the game against the Badgers, which features the same feel as those to be donned by UW, as noted in a recent blog post by the Lincoln Journal Star.

Notably, the Cornhuskers will employ black helmets for the first time in school history.

The shock factor of a uniform deviation at most schools is big, but especially so at Nebraska and Wisconsin, whose conservative look is both ingrained and incredibly similar.

Since Barry Alvarez rolled out the Motion W in the early 1990s replacing the block W the Badgers’ standard jerseys have been consistent in appearance, and as memory serves they’ve utilized "special" jerseys just three times in that span, going 1 2 in those games.
